Q&A with keysman Matt Langley
Call it musical profiling if you will, but one doesn’t generally expect the progressive nature of Fair To Midland‘s style of rock and metal to come bubbling up from the vastness of Texas. Band’s like this tend to take root in places like Chicago, Los Angeles, New York or Boston. Perhaps it is that Southern complexity that makes Fair To Midland such an intriguing listen.
Formed in 1998 by friends Darroh Sudderth (vocals) and Cliff Campbell (guitars) in Sulphur Springs, Texas. In 2001, percussionist Brett Stower invited his friend Matt Langley along to check the band out. The keyboardist eventually became a guest musician on the band’s debut self-released album, The Carbon Copy Silver Lining. From that point on Langley just kept returning and by the release of 2004′s inter.funda.stifle, Langley had become a fixture in the band, and remains to this day.
System of A Down‘s Serj Tankian would become a huge fan, ultimately signing them to his label, Serjical Strike Records, which would release the band’s major label debut through Universal, Fables from a Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times Is True. The band would later move away from Tankian and his label, and were readily snapped up by eOne Music. The band’s fourth album, and eOne debut is Arrows & Anchors, and easily a Top 10 album pick for 2011.
