Q&A with QUEENSRŸCHE Frontman GEOFF TATE on Dedicated to Chaos

Rock’s social anthropologist gives his take on the art of music.

With the release of its twelfth studio album, Queensrÿche has once again bucked convention by taking its signature sound into unexplored territory for the band. Dedicated To Chaos has sparked much debate across the world wide web about the direction the band has taken this time out. Much of the response has been positive, but many diehard old school ‘Ryche fans remain tethered to the days of Empire, Operation Mindcrime, and even debut EP. And according to frontman Geoff Tate, “that’s okay.” It’s okay not to like everything the band does.

Queensrÿche is currently out on its 30th Anniversary Tour, and those diehard fans are sure to get a heavy dose of classic ryche and roll. Tate stated in our interview that the band is only doing a couple of the new tunes on this round of touring, and the setlists change frequently to keep the band as fresh and excited as the fans.

I had an opportunity to sit down with Geoff prior to the band’s Boise soundcheck to discuss the tour and the new album. A man at ease with his life and his career, Tate makes no apology for the music he and the band create. They are artists after all, and people grow. Art grows with them. The band intentionally set out to to put some fun and funk into Dedicated To Chaos. They’ve succeeded, and open minded fans have reaped the rewards. So let’s “get started…”
