Wes Derby – Founder and Managing Partner (yeah he DJs too)
Wes Derby was born in Portland, Oregon in 1978. As a boy, he was raised with a love for all things country, hard rock, and classic rock, and could identify most country artists if given a song title at the age of 4. He moved to Phoenix at the age of 8, where he learned to play some piano, trumpet, and spent several years in the high school marching band as the first blind percussionist in his district. As the country music thing didn’t seem to be happening, he became the music critic for the school newspaper, and later went on to fame and glory…Or something like it…as a DJ at his community college in Scottsdale, AZ, where he was known as The Blind Watchman, a name which seemed to bother the sighted community more than it did fellow blind people.
Upon moving to Seattle in late 1999, he found radio jobs to not be happening, and went to work for a library, where he has been ever since. Though working with books now, he’s never lost his love for good music, and talking about whatever he wants to talk about. The internet seemed the perfect outlet. He started broadcasting online thanks to the encouragement of a friend, Toonhead, over at 2020TheBlink.net in September of 2009. In November of 2009, DerbyRadio.us was born, and has now evolved into Mojo Radio.
Because he’s a renegade, and the founder, he doesn’t necessarily keep a consistent schedule for when he goes on the air, but it’s generally Friday, Saturday, or Sunday night sometime. Follow Wes on Twitter or Facebook, and you’ll see the show announcements. Also, watch the station blog. You can keep in touch with wes via email at wes@mojoradio.us.
